Planting lily of the valley is the secret to a low maintenance groundcover that's hardy in Zones 2 to 7. Lily of the valley craves shade. Moist, well-drained soil that's rich in organic matter yields best growth, but this groundcover is versatile, adapting to any soil — clay, sand, acidic or dry. The one thing it can't stand is strong, all day sun or hot, dry conditions.
